Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside French warplanes in a combined operation on an underground arms cache in Syria operated by the Islamic State group (IS), according to the UK's MoD.

The location, identified by intelligence, was assessed as containing munitions and bombs, the release indicated, and was positioned in mountains just to the north of the ancient city of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our aircraft utilized precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to target a series of access tunnels leading to the facility... preliminary assessments are that the target was engaged successfully," the ministry announced.

There was no indication of any harm to civilians in the operation on Saturday evening and each participating jet made a safe return, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon FGR4s were backed up by a Voyager tanker plane.

The Islamic State group - also known as the so-called Islamic State - enforced extremist governance over significant areas in Iraq and Syria before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This operation demonstrates the UK's leading role, and resolve to operate in unison with allied nations, to stamp out any resurgence of IS and their violent and radical beliefs in the region," UK Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary stated.

RAF aircraft have conducted overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "forestall any attempted resurgence" of Islamic State subsequent to its defeat at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the ministry said.

"I extend gratitude to all the members of British forces who took part in this operation for their expertise and their courage," Healey added. "Including them were thousands of UK service members deployed over the holidays. This operation, to take out terrorist threats who pose a risk to our way of life, shows how UK forces are always on standby, continuously, protecting the UK within its borders and powerful internationally."

During December, the US military executed what it called a "large-scale strike" targeting Daesh sites in the country, following an attack resulted in the deaths of two US troops and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.

The UN reports Islamic State still has between 5,000 and 7,000 combatants in both countries.
