Tetris Didn't Win at This Gaming Ceremony — Another Award Type May Address This Issue

As any major prize-giving event nears, one notices a clamor for the addition of new categories to honor unsung work and fill the passions of fans dedicated to specific genres.

My colleague previously argued supporting a scary games classification. It would be amazing. The same goes for strategy board titles, this being a dedicated supporter's campaign. But they will have to forgive me for pushing forward since similar to single-minded supporters, I have a cast-iron argument supporting my request is the most urgent above others. This is the request: There should be an award type for logic-based games.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Organizing artistic expressions isn't exact; it’s very subjective, and it will always generate discussions resulting in unclear classifications. There’s a reason film award organizations avoid this approach. But it is a necessary evil in the world of interactive entertainment, which are so diverse they barely qualify one unified medium.

For the full spectrum of achievement in video games to gain proper attention, and to ensure all game types to have a chance for representation, genre categories are essential.

Current Gaming Award Categories

The major gaming awards currently feature genre categories for Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Together, these award types effectively encompass numerous genres, and you can find room for most games within them.

Different situation exists for puzzle games. There’s simply nowhere to accommodate them. Think about these recent excellent titles, each quite distinct: the architectural riddles in a particular game, intense tile-matching of another game, engaging interpersonal challenges from additional release. What category would fit them within current classifications? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Acknowledgment Issues

There are dozens outstanding logic titles launched regularly that have no home in entertainment awards, except when they manage to fit classification types such as Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, or the extremely competitive independent game categories.

  • One classic puzzle game got overlooked for anything during that awards season
  • Another imaginative release missed out in 2019
  • Popular arranging title was overlooked in 2021
  • Only a few logic titles managed to sneak into niche award types

Significance of Puzzle Games

Frequently they represent small games, but the art in brain-teasers carries substantial weight. Iconic mobile puzzle games stand as the most-played games globally continuing this trend for over a decade.

The legendary block-stacking game rivals well-known building titles claiming status as best-selling game of all time; it additionally competes for top gaming experience. Puzzle games are foundational within interactive entertainment, and engaging with almost every other genre.

The Solution and Justification

Logic titles wouldn't face such difficulty. It would be easy to populate five nominees with fascinating, diverse, deserving games annually without trouble — perhaps, with difficulty, since numerous excellent many worthy titles.

To emphasize again, these are games that otherwise have no home in important events. Puzzle game makers are working at the demanding boundary of video game design, producing among essential manifestations of gaming itself. Just like cinema stunt performers, they merit acknowledgment. Let’s not keep them waiting decades.
