Zohran Mamdani Vows a 'Fresh Chapter' for New York City in First Address
During an initial day in his new role, Zohran Mamdani committed to “reinvent” America's largest city, promising “a different age” and an audacious start to his tenure.
A Groundbreaking Figure
The 34-year-old figure, who was a virtually unknown state assemblyman, now stands as the city's first Muslim mayor. He also made history by being the first to be take the oath of office using the Islamic holy text.
“A time such as this seldom arrives and rarer still is it that the citizens whose hands are upon the mechanisms of progress,” Mamdani added.
Rejecting advice to temper hopes, the mayor asserted: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to redefine is that of modest goals. Beginning today we will lead expansively and audaciously.”
Adhering to Democratic Socialist Ideals
Mamdani openly embraced his political ideology. “I was elected as a socialist leader and I will lead as one. I will not forsake my ideals for concern of being called radical,” he proclaimed to rapturous applause.
The ceremony was a dual event, starting with a midnight oath-taking in a disused subway station. He was formally sworn in on the front steps of city hall by political ally Bernie Sanders, who spoke of Mamdani's ascent as a victory over the status quo.
An Ambitious Blueprint
Mamdani now undertakes one of the most demanding jobs in American politics, with a agenda including:

- Fare-free public buses
- A rent freeze for nearly 1 million households
- A trial program of city-run grocery stores
